my secret snack mix recipe

A BBQ version of a that salty, sweet, buttery and crunchy American classic, Chex Mix.  Combine the following in a large baking dish or hotel pan:

  • 1 Box of Chex or Crispix cereal
  • 2 Cups of BBQ Fritos
  • 2 Cups of Cheez-Its
  • 2 Cups of mini flat pretzels
  • 2 Cups of Honey Sesame Sticks
  • 1 Cup of Almonds

Mods: Swap out any of the above with your other favorite crunchies. Melba toast, Ritz Crackers, Club Crackers, etc are all popular substitutions.

Next, combine:

  • 1.25 sticks of melted butter
  • 1.5 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce

Mods: Add hot sauce to make it spicy!

Pour over the dry ingredients. Gently mix the butter into the dry ingredients. Finally sprinkle our favorite rub over the mixture. I used Meat Church's Honey Hog BBQ rub. Re-mix and continue to add rub until the rub is evenly coated.

Note: the rub should turn the mix slightly reddish. It will be darker the more rub you add.

Set your smoker to 300. Transfer mix to cookie sheet or parchment paper.  Cook for 20-30 minutes. Stir the mixture after 10 minutes and then check on it every 5-10 minutes depending on how fast the mixture is cooking. Let the mixture cool before storing.
